The Marin Headlands of Northern California are filled with fortifications and bunkers of the Twentieth Century. They sit now, as reminders of past conflicts, sacrifice, and fear— slowly decaying and mostly forgotten. Today, as we live with our own trials, fears, and burdens, the old bunkers are wise teachers. They remind us that nothing is permanent. But they also instruct us that nothing is new. The burdens of life have been with us forever.
