Intimacy with a place takes many years and many visits. There's something to be said for returning to a few places throughout a lifetime in order to really know them well. I have been traveling to Venice with my wife for some thirty years. And my camera has always been with me. It plays an increasingly large role in my understanding and discovery of this remarkable place known, in its heyday, as La Serenissima.
La Serenissima: The Most Serene. It is hard to imagine Venice being called that today, given the burden that modern tourism places upon it. But serenity, although elusive, can still be found among the allies, canals, and faded glories of this stunning place. Even in its noble rot, Venice is unsurpassed in beauty and intrigue.
This body of work is ever-evolving. Venice is one of the most photographed places in the world and it takes time for the photographer to get beneath the veneer of the cliché shots. Once can't avoid them, the storybook views are irresistible. But, it is only after making the obvious and obligatory photos that one can find the hidden Venice; the place that speaks to the soul. So, on I go, returning to Venice again and again and finding more each time. The La Serenissima galleries will evolve with time as does my understanding and appreciation of this place.
