The Empty Market

Freshly cut asparagus sits in a kitchen window along with some spring rosesSpring Still Life #1 | Mark Lindsay

"Not yet?" I asked.

I'd thought this would be the week. It was early March and I was eagerly awaiting asparagus season. I'd turned the corner towards a long row of stalls at the farmer's market. My favorite vendor became visible. My heart sank as I saw only potatoes displayed at his stall. Asparagus season was not yet to be. It would be another long week before the lovely spears would trumpet the true arrival of spring. Forget the calendar, fresh asparagus in Northern California tells me that spring is here. But, it wouldn't be this week.

The Shrimp People

It had taken two days to prepare the food for a lens-based show several us had curated back when we were graduate students at JFKU. A Moment Soon Gone

There are times in a photographer's life when the light is so exquisitely right that it aches. When the right light combines with a compelling subject one can feel an alchemical change occurring. Clicking the shutter becomes an intoxication, something we must do. Endorphins rush into the brain. It's heady stuff.

"Just What Are You Doing?"

Food stand employee stares at photographer while serving a clientFood Stand, Farmer's Market | Mark Lindsay

I stand there with my big, nerdy camera and they look up at me—straight at me. Their glare goes right through the lens and then right through me. I shiver. It's my least favorite aspect about photography. I am probably the shyest, most self-conscious photographer in the world.
