Archival Print Process

Our Fine-Arts Printing Process

Our prints are custom-printed on an Epson 9800 printer. This printer is capable of printing on rolls up to 44 inches wide and up to several hundred feet in length. The printer is driven by a professional-grade Raster Image Processor (RIP) that can lay down ink with incredible fidelity and smoothness of tone. The entire process is tightly managed, using industry-standard color management processes. Please see our fees & prices for more information

Ink

This printer uses state-of-the-art pigment-based K3 inks that are rated to last up to 200 years. The inks have a high gamut (color range) and are the finest available anywhere. Epson K3 inks print beautifully in both color and black & white on most any substrate. They exhibit low levels of metamerism, bronzing, and color variation and are used in work displayed in galleries and museums worldwide.

Paper

We print on acid-free archival paper, suitable for galleries and museums. A wide range of papers and canvas is available. Each paper is calibrated with its own color profile, insuring consistency and optimum ink gamut. We offer a selection of house papers and a number of special-order substrates as well. Samples are available to help you make your choice.

Process

The process we use depends upon the medium used by the artist. With digital photography we take the original image files and edit them (if necessary) upon consultation with the artist. Analog negatives or transparencies are first scanned and digitized before editing and correction. For original paintings and drawings smaller than 8.5 x 11 inches, the artwork is scanned directly into our computers. For larger originals, we first photograph the artwork onto 4x5" or 8x10" sheets of color transparency film which is then scanned and digitized. Each digital file, regardless of source, is carefully corrected so as to yield a reproduction that is faithful to the original.

Proof

Artists proofs are created in order to assure that that translation to the printing process is complete and as accurate as possible. Proofs are available in various sizes and types.

The process is highly customized for each project as there are no two originals that are exactly alike. The media used will often dictate the steps of the process. We work directly with the artist to achieve optimum results. As artists ourselves, we understand the creative process and honor it in everything we do.

Photoshop Tutoring

Photoshop Training for Photographers & Artists

We offer individualized training and tutoring to artists, photographers, and graphic arts professionals in Marin County and the San Francisco Bay Area. While there is much available online and in schools, colleges, and universities, we are different. We work individually with each of our clients. We will develop and implement a custom-designed program for you, based upon your application needs, skill-level, and artistic style. No one plan can possibly fit all. We're here to help you become a Photoshop expert in your given field.

Photoshop is a magnificent tool but it is often misunderstood and its features applied with a heavy hand or in a way that destroys the original image pixels. We strive, in our training, to offer artistic and creative integrity in everything we teach our students. Photoshop is a means to an artistic end, not the end unto itself. Our goal is to help you make more meaningful and expressive images, not images that look contrived or overly manipulated.

All lessons are taught by Mark Lindsay on an individual basis. He is an expert in imaging technology, using Photoshop most every day in the creation and refinement of his gallery images. Please call or email us for more information.

Let us design a Photoshop training program for you.
